Dating from Saxon times, Warminster lies to the south west of Salisbury Plain, beneath the chalk downland with its abundant flora and fauna, and at the head of one of Britain's "best kept secrets" - the Wylye Valley with its attractive villages and historic landscape. The town boasts many historic attractions of its own and an almost unrivalled proximity to a wealth of interesting and beautiful places to see in Wiltshire - all within a 30 mile radius. In the 1960s and early 1970s Cradle Hill became famous as the centre of a flap surrounding UFOs and crop circles with at least one author claiming that as many as 5000 UFOs had been witnessed in the area. Some of these sightings have been refuted and at least one exponent of the UFO phenomenon has admitted faking photographic evidence. Warminster is also the home to the world famous Longleat park, which incoludes a huge mansion where Lord Bath lives and a safari park with in the grounds attracting thousands of tourists every year to see the exotic animals that roam the grounds. |
